This spring Plume will publish Jillian Lauren's memoir Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, about the 18 months she spent as one of Prince Jefri of Brunei's playthings-for-hire. At 18, when Lauren was an NYU theater school dropout, a "casting director" offered her $20,000 to party with a rich businessman and a bunch of other young American lovelies for two weeks. Soon after Lauren found herself on a plane to Brunei, where she spend 18 months in the 40-girl harem of Prince Jefri, the Sultan of Brunei's younger brother and owner of famed hotels like the New York Palace and Hotel Bel-Air, earning a small fortune. She writes about rooms in the Prince's opulent palace "where absurdly beautiful women lounged on every inch of the upholstery" and exotic orgies ensued. "I fell victim to Stockholm Syndrome," Lauren writes. "I knew I was a hooker, but somehow I felt like Cinderella." The Prince often loaned her to the Sultan for sex sessions, which she was compensated for with lavish shopping sprees. You'll have to wait until publication for the really sexy bits. "Some Girls would have been riveting even if Lauren had merely illuminated the murky world of high-class prostitution," notes author Jennifer Eagan. "The fact that she does so with humor, candor, and a reporter's gimlet eye is an added delight."

Skull and Bones Ballot Box Up For Auction

A rather intriguing lot will be up for auction at Christie's later this month. An 1872 skull ballot box from Yale University's mysterious Skull and Bones society will be sold as part of Christie's New York's Important American Furniture, Folk Art, Silver & Chinese Export sale on January 22. The skull has a hinge on top and is surrounded by charred-looking crossbones one inscribed with the word Thor. Skull and Bones was founded in 1832 and has been the subject of many works of history and fiction (I found Secrets of the Tomb to be particularly riveting). Many notable Yalies including both Bush presidents have been members. The lot includes a black book with names and photographs of earlier members and is estimated at $10,000 to $20,000.

The brand is clearly looking for publicity. Owner Jeff Borysiewicz has said that the company doesn't condone anyone's alleged extramarital affairs but welcomes Woods as a potential endorser. Woods has visited Corona in the company of Charles Parker before. Some of Woods' core endorsers including Accenture, Gillette and Gatorade have said they will review their association with the golfer and he won't be playing golf for a little while so perhaps he should take the deal for some running around money.

Casino Mogul Steve Wynn Is The New Owner Of Pricey Rembrandt

It has been revealed that casino mogul Steve Wynn is the proud new owner of the Rembrandt painting that sold for a record $33.2 million last week at Christie's in London. The 1658 "Portrait of a Man, Half-Length, With His Arms Akimbo," was sold over the telephone. Wynn has not officially revealed that he was the buyer but the NY Times reported that he called several art dealers and scholars to ask their opinions of the piece before the sale. Wynn is famous for his art collection which includes excellent pieces by Rubens, Vermeer and Cezanne as well as the Picasso masterpiece, Le Reve. Wynn, who suffers from the eye disease retinitis pigmentosa, famously put his elbow through the picture in 2006.

One of our favorite celebrity pilots actor Morgan Freeman has a new toy for the holidays, a fancy new private jet. Gulf News reports that Freeman bought the SJ30 plane which was produced by Sino Swearingen Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of United Arab Emirates-based Emivest. Earlier this year as my colleague Jared Paul Stern reported, the SJ30 set a world speed record from London to Dubai in just 7hr 7 min including a fuel stop in Istanbul. The six-seater can retain sea level cabin pressure at 41,000 ft., reducing jet lag, and can fly more than 2,800 miles nonstop at speeds of up to 630 mph. It sells for approximately $8 million. Freeman flew the plane from Los Angeles to Dubai to attend a a press conference at the Executive Flight Center at the Dubai Airport Free Zone to announce the sale of the new SJ30 from Emivest to Freeman. The Gulf News article says that Freeman is expected to stay in the UAE until December 27.

Here is a tip for the super-wealthy: Do not build a ludicrously large mansion if you may someday be accused of racketeering. This mansion will change from a symbol of your stupid wealth to a symbol of your outright stupidity.
The house that reclusive billionaire trader Steven A. Cohen built is 35,000 square-feet. Well, maybe 36,000 now: Last year, Cohen applied for a permit to add 1,000 more. This act of hubris must have angered the gods, because he's in trouble now.

The Times is reporting today that Cohen's ex-wife, Patricia, has filed a lawsuit against him. In it, she claims he scammed millions of dollars during their 1988 divorce by hiding money from her—and the IRS—in shady real-estate deals. The suit also accuses Cohen of insider trading. According to the Times Dealbook blog:
She claims in her suit that in 1985, while they were married, Mr. Cohen confessed to her that he received inside information on the takeover of RCA by General Electric. When she asked him if trading on such information would be illegal, Mr. Cohen said that that he knew that the source was a former classmate of his from Wharton. But he obtained the information from a mutual friend, so he was not involved in insider trading.
Also, just sleazy finance-related behavior in general: After Patricia made almost a million dollars through real-estate deals, she claims Steven took the money, placed it in an account in his name and told her she couldn't touch it. This thing is going to be messy. Patricia Cohen's lawyer told the Times, "What I look forward to most is the day when Steve Cohen has to face 12 people on a jury and have to answer for what he did to his former wife." Damn.
And the case will seriously compound Cohen's other recent troubles: He and his company, SAC Capital Advisors, are being eyed by feared FBI investigator B.J. Kang in the case of an insider trading ring involving ex-SAC employees. (Which also encompasses the charming story of Andrew Tong—a trader allegedly forced to perform oral sex on his boss.)
Who knows how Cohen will fare in the lawsuit or the investigation. One thing's for sure: Behind the walls of his huge mansion, Cohen has got to be fuming about the attention this is bringing him. This man is private to the point of neurosis: According to Reuters, "Cohen is so intensely private he hates being photographed and has even bought the rights to some pictures taken by freelancers."
This description of his house from a lengthy 2003 BusinessWeek profile completes the image of the shut-in billionaire who values his privacy as much as he does his wealth:
It is completely obscured from the street by a roughly 12-foot-high wall. Cohen is so secretive that he installed an extensive alarm system that beeps whenever someone walks into a room or out, say acquaintances.
The grounds, which some neighbors call Chelsea Piers — after the mammoth Manhattan sports complex on the Hudson River — include a basketball court that becomes an ice-skating rink in winter, several golf holes, and a bubble-enclosed swimming pool. "For kids, getting invited to the Cohens is one of the most coveted invitations in Greenwich," says a neighbor.
Remember, billionaire readers: It's always those last 1,000 square feet that bring fate crashing terribly down on your head.

DR. MARK DEAN

Mark Dean (born March 2, 1957) is an inventor and a computer scientist. He holds three of the nine original IBM patents upon which the IBM PC personal computers were based. He led the team that developed the ISA bus, and he led the design team responsible for creating the first one-gigahertz computer processor chip.
Born in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Dean holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
Dean is the first African-American to become an IBM Fellow which is the highest level of technical excellence at the company. In 1997, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Currently, he is an IBM Vice President overseeing the company's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.
Dean led a team that developed the interior architecture (ISA systems bus) that enables multiple devices, such as modems and printers, to be connected to personal computers.
Dean made history again by leading the design team responsible for creating the first 1-gigahertz processor chip, another significant step in making computers faster and smaller.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported about $2.7 million in income for 2008, mainly from book sales. The first couple paid about $855,000 in federal income taxes.
Their income declined from 2007, when the Obamas reported about $4.1 million, again mostly from books, and paid about $1.4 million in taxes.
"The president sold a lot of books last year, no doubt, and paid a hefty amount in federal income tax," press secretary Robert Gibbs said Wednesday. The first family's effective tax rate was around 31%, down from the 33.7% rate they paid in 2007.

In Aspen, Colo., actress and former Playmate Barbi Benton and her husband George Gradow have put their futuristic house known as the Copper Palace on the market for $25 million. Comprising five copper pods connected by stairways, the 25,000-square-foot building is cantilevered in sections to provide views from all areas of the house. Each pod has its own function: The living and entertaining pod, for example, has both a disco and a ballroom. Other features include a gym, a theater and two heated lap pools. The house, which is set on 40 acres in Aspen's tony neighborhood of Starwood, was designed by architect Bart Prince. If the house sells for $25 million, it will set a new record for Aspen real estate. The most expensive home to date sold in Aspen was the Red Mountain home of Czech tycoon (and accused swindler) Viktor Kozeny, which fetched $19.7 million in 1997.
